NYCC 2016: America Chavez Goes Solo In "America"!

Marvel Comics has heard their fans and is giving America Chavez, the updated take on Miss America her own comic in a series simply titled AMERICA. The news was announced today at New York Comic Con (NYCC) along with the cover to the first issue.

The cover for the first issue showcases art by former Young Avengers artist Jamie McKelvie and colorist Matt Wilson. Marvel didn't release any other details outside of saying the series is “coming soon.” McKelvie also confirmed on Twitter that he and colorist Matt Wilson will provide covers for the series.

America Chavez was created as a modern-day spin on the Miss America heroic identity, which has roots going back to Marvel’s WWII Golden Age. The new Miss America often referred to as Miss America Chavez, or simply America has gain a very vocal fanbase. As a Latina character and an out and open member of the LGBTQ community America Chavez gives voice to a lot of young women out there who see themselves through her.

America was created by writer Joe Casey and artist Nick Dragotta, as Ms. America in the 2011 mini-series Vengeance. An LGBTQ Latina teenager raised by her mothers in the Utopian Parallel, Chavez possesses superhuman strength and durability, as well as the ability to fly and travel between dimensions by kicking star shaped portals.

While having been created in 2011 it wasn't really until the 2013 Young Avengers series by Kieron Gillen, McKelvie and Wilson, alongside Wiccan, Hulkling, Kate Bishop, Noh-Varr, Kid Loki, Prodigy and Speed did her popularity hit new heights. Since then cosplayers started filling comic cons and other events dressed as her. Marvel must have took notice to the growing fanbase as she shortly appeared in the Secret Wars mini-series A-Force by G. Willow Wilson, Marguerite Bennett and Jorge Molina. More recently she has been featured in the popular series Ultimates, by Al Ewing and Kenneth Rocafort.

Even with her growing popularity there were no announcements of a solo series featuring the young heroine, until now. This announcement comes a little less than three months after Image announced their newest series titled All-America Comix in July. The series will star America Vasquez, a young Latina going on cosmic adventures while sporting a street-level costume with a patriotic theme. The series will feature the familiar creative team that brought us America Chavez herself in writer Joe Casey and artist Nick Dragotta. Even the solicitation for All-America Comix eludes to it being in response to the fans wanting to see America Chavez in a comic.
“You wanted it! You got it! She is a hero for our time — and the time is NOW! A superpowered champion of the oppressed, AMERICA VASQUEZ is the one you’ve been waiting for! And this may be her greatest adventure of all. When she is confronted with the hidden secrets of the universe, you won’t believe the cosmic truth she uncovers! Issue #1 hits — and we do mean HITS — in 2017 from Image Comics!”
