Enjoy 120
pages of action, drama, and romance in Coronary!
This comic book series focuses on strong women and body positivity. Coronary is Romeo and Juliet meets Black
Mirror, with a lot more plastic surgery.
Coronary is created/written by Liv and Ryan Burke,
penciled, inked and lettered by Joel
Saavedra and colored by Damian Peñabla. This first
volume collects the first four chapter of the proposed twelve issue series. The
first episode of the series was selected as a finalist for the ComiXCentral
Comic of the Year 2018, and over the past three years, Coronary has raised over $15,000 through Kickstarter campaigns.
The
Kickstarter is looking to reach its $5,000 goal by October 5, 2019 at 3:00 PM
EDT. Rewards include the first opportunity followers of Coronary will have to get a digital ($5) and physical ($12) copy of
Coronary: Episode 4 as well as a digital
($25) and physical ($35) copy of Coronary
Volume 1. Other rewards include all the previous tiers plus custom stickers
and your name included as a co-producer on Episode
4 and Volume 1 ($40). You can see
the rest of the rewards when you check out their Kickstarter page here.
I’ve
spoken with Ryan Burke a couple times before about Coronary (episode 2 and episodes 1-3). Here’s a whole new batch of questions so readers can delve even
deeper into the series!
Ryan Burke |
Me: How would you describe the relationship between
Justin and Luna, plus its importance to your story?
Burke: Justin and Luna are in that weird middle space
between hating each other's guts and dating. Right in that space! They're
important because they're the central battle of the story, between business and
everything punk, anti-establishment, and cool. Everything else revolves around
that contention.
Me: If you were casting for Coronary as a TV show or movie, which format would you go with and
who would you cast in the parts?
Burke: Oooh. I'd say it'd fit a TV show the best
because I can be as indulgent as possible! I can explore the world as much as I
do in the comic. Casting....I'd think it'd be a toss-up between Ben Barnes and
Daniel Dae Kim for Justin. Luna would be Aubrey Plaza. I mean, it's got to be,
right? The rest, I've yet to cast. Yet!
Me: Which ad has been the worst beauty ad you’ve
seen and why?
Burke: The worst I'd probably say was a byline on a
cover, which was essentially 'how to dress for global warming'. It really got
me down for a few days. It's clear that we must be stylish for environmental
ruin, right?
Me: What about the best beauty ad you’ve seen?
Burke: Oooh. Anything that subverts the expectations.
I think Target recently started using realistic, human shaped people for their
models, and have done pretty well off of it.
Me: What is the number one reason why people should
pledge money to your project?
Burke: Because you get to support a project that's
been months and years in the making, with a great message. And you get to say
you're part of it, and helped the team. Seriously, we love you folks. And for
this one, we're doing a promo where you choose to save a character, and they'll
write you to thank you!
Me: This is your fourth Kickstarter campaign. What
have been the biggest lessons you’ve learned while running your first three
campaigns?
Burke: The biggest lessons have been shaking the
anxiety of self-promotion, and being proud of the work we've all done so far,
and standing by that. It's an achievement, you know? Not everyone is lucky enough
to be as cool as we comic folks, hahaha!
Me: From your last couple interviews, you shared
some inspirational words with us. What additional inspirational words do you
have for aspiring writers?
Burke: Message me @ryanburkewriter and
I'll help you! Or at least, share what I've learned, and at least five others
willing. Comics is a family after all.
Me: Thanks
for taking the time to dissect Coronary a
bit with us, Ryen! Readers, if you’re ready for a makeover you won’t soon
forget, then give Coronary’s official Kickstarter page
a look!
