New Avengers #13.INH Review

By: Jay Reyes

During Infinity Black Bolt release a Terrigenesis bomb causing seemingly normal humans to transform and allow their inner Inhuman come out. This emergence of a new race is on a global scale and the effects are being felt all over the Marvel universe including the New Avengers.

Inhumanity Tie-In! – “The Other Side”

With the consequences of Infinity fresh on their minds, tough decisions are made. A new Illuminati gathers. We learn more about the other beings related to the Incursions

The Goods: I hate being super negative but this book really  has no redeeming qualities other than massively annoying me to the point where I didn’t want to read anything else.

The only part of this book  I liked was when Dr. Strange showed up (not a spoiler) and that was just because of the art.

The Bad: I warn you now  If you have an emotional attachment to Jonathan Hickman's writing, skip the bad because this will be a rant... I  couldn’t even stomach finishing the book. Who's idea was it to recruit Hickman as a writer for any superhero book. People like to say Scott Snyder and Grant Morrison are over rated but at least they can write an accessible book that doesn’t feel like a chore to read. I read Infinity, I shouldn't be struggling to figure out what is going on if I actually read the material before this. I don’t get what the problem is with Hickman anyway, his plots are so over complicated that I feel stupid.

I know everyone gets on DC because of  editorial interference but now I understand why it happens because they don’t want their universe to be a mess like Hickman's Avengers is. I hate being negative but Hickman’s universe is in my opinion garbage.  The only thing that can save The Avengers is if they bring in all new better writers to clean up this mess that Hickman has caused.

Overall: This review is based on my opinion and how I personally feel about Hickman as a writer. I know Jonathan Hickman has a loyal fan base willing to come to his aid for anything but I really think Hickman's writing here isn’t on par with one of his best titles East of West.  Avengers and New Avengers post infinity is a hot mess and I really hope these books can get better. I might try out Avengers World just because Hickman is not writing it alone, and it so happens that Nick Spencer is killing it with Superior Foes of Spider-Man.

  1. I agree with your opinion about Jonathan Hickman. I avoid all that he writes.

But I am not sure how I will "avoid" next year's Secret War since it will be so all pervasive. Maybe I'll take the year off.
