Marvel Shakes Up Their Big Three In A SUPERIOR Way

With just a little less than a week to San Diego Comic-Con Marvel has been filling up headlines from The View, to The Colbert Report, to Entertainment Weekly with their latest initiative, AVENGERS NOW!

The week started off with the announcement on The View that Thor, The God of Thunder was no longer worthy to wield the mighty Mjolnir and was being replaced with a female who is worthy and with it take the name Thor herself. THOR #1 will launch in October written by Jason Aaron and art by Russell Dauterman and will spin out of the events of Original Sin
“For reasons that will be revealed in Original Sin, Thor won’t be able to pick up the hammer. Someone has to pick up the hammer. And someone does. And they become Thor. There are several women in Thor’s life, and one of them is going to be the new Thor. You aren’t going to find out who it is for some time. This is a slowly unfolding mystery.”
– Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor-In-Chief

That was followed by rumors of something SUPERIOR for November which had many fans thinking of a Superior Iron Man with the true Stark Heir Arno Stark in the armor. Along with word that Joe Quesada would be making a big announcement for Marvel on last night’s The Colbert Report. Along with the SUPERIOR rumor many people believed it would be to announce what title was getting the SUPERIOR treatment, but instead he revealed that Sam Wilson, The Falcon will be Steve Rogers' replacement as Captain America in November’s ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 written by Rick Remender and art by Stuart Immonen
“Steve Rogers saved the world again, but not without personal sacrifice. Steve had to hand the mantle over and Sam Wilson The Falcon is becoming the new Captain America.”
– Joe Quesada, Marvel Chief Creator Officer

But what happened with that SUPERIOR rumor? Well it’s no longer a rumor now, Marvel has announced through Entertainment Weekly last night that they will be completing a revamp of their Big Three (Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor) by announcing SUPERIOR IRON MAN #1. The new series will be written by Tom Taylor (Injustice Gods Among Us, Earth 2) and art by Yildiray Cinar (Supergirl, World’s Finest) together they will take the SUPERIOR IRON MAN in a new direction, a new coast and a new city in San Francisco. While Alonso doesn’t reveal who will be the man in the Superior Armor, the direction he describes does sound like Arno will indeed be the SUPERIOR IRON MAN come November.
“The Genius Bar costume is there for a reason. The newly-transformed Superior Iron Man has very ambitious plans for the city that some of its residents embrace, but not all. Like the Superior Spider-Man, Superior Iron Man is a character that’s hard to root for.”
– Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor-In-Chief

But with all of this news now on their Big Three what can Marvel announce at San Diego Comic-Con next weekend that will be buzz worthy? Well Avengers NOW! Goes way beyond them, and some of the other characters yet to be discussed are seen in the image above including, Medusa, Scarlet Witch, Dr. Strange, Ant Man, The Winter Soldier, Angela, Inferno, and Deathlok. While Marvel is keeping their cards close to their chest on what other books will be announced, Alonso did note that Marvel has several female-centric titles on the market now.
“There was a time about two and a half years ago, when we were canceling X-23, and I realized that was the last of our female-helmed titles.”
– Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor-In-Chief

You can bet that Marvel isn’t done yet, so expect more news to come leading up to, and throughout Comic-Con which will take place July 23-27 in San Diego. Comic Frontline along with Comic Related are primed and ready to keep everyone updated on the latest from Comic-Con!
