SDCC: Marvel Sets Date For Guardians of The Galaxy 2

Yesterday at Comic-Con International: San Diego we learned that James Gunn will be writing and directing Guardians of The Galaxy 2, Now we have an update that includes an official release date!

The news was delivered from director James Gunn and Chris Pratt at the conclusion of the Marvel Studios Panel in Marvel's Hall H.

Nicole Perlman, the co-writer of Guardians of The Galaxy, revealed Friday that Gunn would return to direct and writer the follow-up.

A sequel announced even this early, is a bit of a no-brainer, as early reviews for the space adventure have been overwhelmingly positive. Many experts have the movie on track to gross more than $60 million in its opening weekend. Marvel's parent company Disney has also put a lot of merchandising muscle behind the film. Priming what was once a fringe property into the company's next big retail franchise that can be alongside their powerhouse franchises of The Avengers and Spider-Man.

While early speculation had the sequel aiming for the May 6, 2016 date, they announced it will take the July 28, 2017, release date. This is just one of the six release dates that Marvel snatched up within the past week that run through 2019. No other films were announced during the panel which leaves the rest of the studio's calendar unknown to us..

Guardians of The Galaxy opens in theaters everywhere August 1, 2014 and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou , John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin.
