Breaking News: Supergirl's Costume Revealed!

 CBS  & Warner Bros Television kick off the start of the Supergirl production with an official release of the first two images of  the title character portrayed by Melissa Benoist in full Supergirl costume. The two images show us two sides of the character with the first being a full body, serious pose shot, while the second is a headshot with Benoist smiling.

The costume is designed by Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood, who has also designed the costumes for  The CW  title heroes on The Flash and Arrow. 

"In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today."

The costume does seem to invoke the classic Supergirl complete with the "S" Shield, cape, no visible midriff, and a red skirt. The alterations/modern "street-style" twists are the over the knee boots (with the knees fully covered), the lack of yellow backing in the "S" Shield, and what appears to be tights/stockings under the skirt. The colors of the costume also feature a slightly muted color palette, but still brighter than her cousin Superman wears on the big screen in The Man of Steel, and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The one costume element we can not see in these images is if there is an "S" Shield on the cape and if so what color?

Supergirl received a series commitment from  CBS  back in September. Arrow heads Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg are both serving as executive producers, along with Ali Adler and Sarah Schechter with Glen Winter directing the pilot.
