Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #25 Review - Shattered Grid!

Previously in Power Rangers: The Rangers defeat Rita's evil Green Ranger breaking the spell and bringing him to their side. Rita teams up with the mysterious Black Dragon who turns out to belong to a parallel universe Tommy who never joined the Power Rangers but instead joined Rita conquering the world gaining the powers of both the Green and White Rangers becoming Lord Drakkon. After the Billy & the Coinless defeat Drakkon he found himself in the main universe and was captured by Prometha until Saba accidently freed him. Now Drakkon is loose as he sets out to destroy not just the Power Rangers but the source of their powers itself. What will happen now? Find out next in this review of MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #25!

The issue starts off at the Time Force Station One where the Time Force Rangers are inspecting a fracture in time and space. The Rangers say that it isn't just in their dimension but in all the others as well as we see the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Dino Charge, and Power Rangers RPM universes. The Time Force Rangers try to stabilize the fracture when Trip, Katie and Lucas fall into it. Wes tells Jen to go and try to fix what caused it as he tries to stabilize it, but as Jen leaves the Megazord it appears to blow up in the fracture. Just then the silhouette of Lord Drakkon appears in the fracture and reaches for Jen, but she escapes into the timestream. Right away Kyle Higgins lets us know in these opening pages that this isn't the Power Rangers where everything works out in the end and the Rangers are safe, these stakes are real right from the opening.

We then cut to present day where the Rangers watch a recording of what happened at the end of the last issue with Lord Drakkon manipulating Saba into attacking and freeing him allowing him to kill the talking saber before he opens a portal and disappears into it. Jason holds Grace responsible for it all since she withheld information from them that they could have used and perhaps prevented Drakkon's escape. Grace shares one final piece of information with Jason, before his escape, Lord Drakkon took his damaged morpher and Power Coin.

We see Lord Drakkon at Ninjor's temple where he is being put through trials to prove his worth, of which he flies by them faster than anyone else has. Drakkon tells Ninjor that he is from the future where they are friends. He tells Ninjor of a great war and that he needs Ninjor, the only one who has true mastery over the coins to repair his morpher and coin for him so he can be him again for the great war.

Jason tells Zordon, Alpha and the other Rangers about what happened at Promethea including Lord Drakkon not only killed Saba before he escaped but he also took his morpher. The teams talks strategy where Zordon and Billy can design some kind of secondary defense shield to protect them against Drakkon based on his energy signature. Trini will try to figure out how to power up the Green Chaos Crystal from the Black Dragonzord to warn the Coinless that Drakkon is heading back there. The rest of the team split up but staying alert in case Drakkon reappears. Kim and Tommy make plans for their first date.

Back at Ninjor's temple Ninjor works hard to fix the powers of Drakkon's morpher and coin and notices the two coins were forced together by brute force, Drakkon tells him it was a last ditched effort. Ninjor informs Drakkon that whatever destroyed his powers did so by corrupting large sections of the energy signature, but he can fix it by re-shaping the signature itself. As Ninjor finishes it Drakkon notices Ninjor's books and is told they belong to the Morphin Masters but won't tell Drakkon who they are or what is in the books. After giving Drakkon the repaired morpher he morphs yelling out BLACK DRAGON and realizes he is weaker than before, to which Ninjor lets him know it will pass with rest offering him a place to stay upstairs. Drakkon passes and it is left ambiguous if Drakkon took out Ninjor before he left or if he just left.

Meanwhile back at the Command Center in the work shop/Zord repair bay Billy and Trini try to figure out how to power up the Green Chaos Crystal, but keep coming up empty when they decide to take a break. After they leave we see that now that Drakkon's morpher and coin have a new energy signature he is allowed to walk into the Command Center without setting off any alarm as he takes the Green Chaos Crystal.

The issue ends with Kimberly and Tommy finishing off their date, and that is all I can say in this review. I don't want to spoil this issue in this review, as this is a HUGE moment for Power Ranger fans, but if you want to discuss this issue spoilers and all you can join me tonight on the latest episode of Shattered Grid: MMPR #25 Review - No Ranger Is Safe at 10:30 PM ET on Comic Frontline's YouTube Channel.

Overall the issue far exceeds the hype of this event. I have been a fan of Power Rangers every since I seen the commercial for the show and this issue is bigger than anything that has ever happened in the 25 year history of the show. Kyle Higgins kills it here and Daniele Di Nicuolo's art immerses us into this world making the impact all the more powerful.

The back up story with Blue Senturion (Ninjor isn't in this one yet) is fun, and could tie into Shattered Grid which is new for the back up stories. While I always enjoy the back up stories, they usually feel out of place in the world that Higgins has created, but this one felt like an extension of it. I look forward to reading these.

I give this an over all of 4 3/4 out of 5 Power Bolts!

  1. Ooh! This seems interesting. I was always the studious one and never showed interest in watching tv or cartoons but now I realize how much I have missed. I make sure this doesn’t happen with my kids. Therefore, I make them watch shows on Netflix because the kids’ content is framed by Andy Yeatman who is amazing at his work.
