TWELVE DEVILS DANCING #1
Written By: Erica Schultz
Art By: Dave Acosta
Colors By: Andrew Covalt
Letters By: Cardinal Rae
Chapter One Cover By: Kelly Williams
Chapter 1 SDCC Cover By: JK Woodward
Chapter 2 Cover By: Maria Laura Sanapo & Jason Lewis
Chapter 3 Cover By: Adriana Melo
Price: $5.99

Twelve Devils Dancing #1 is a gripping fast paced crime drama that comics need. The book deals with former F.B.I. Agent Callum Cooper who is responsible for capturing the Crypto-Killer, a serial killer who left ciphers at the bodies of his victims taunting the F.B.I., except after his stay of execution the real Crypto-Killer calls in with proof they have the wrong man. Gripping right? The story just gets better from there from flashback scenes to Callum on a cult commune to him meeting Aisha the book just grips you with each page turn. The art matches the tone of the book perfectly. The book is broken down into three chapter which are essentially each their own comic, so it is a steel for just $5.99 less than the price of two books you are getting three, with a gripping story and art. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

THE LOST CITY EXPLORES #2
Written By: Zack Kaplan
Art By: Alvaro Sarraseca
Colors By: Dee Cunniffe
Letters By: A Larger World's Troy Peteri
Cover A By: Rafael De Latorre  & Marcelo Maiolo
Price: $3.99

The action doesn't stop and neither does the mystery. We meet a new character Homer, and hacking computer prodigy, and with his help they find out more about what really happened to Hel's father. Hel is a freaking awesome character! I love how badass she is and how she doesn't let anyone talk down to her, or ignore her. Every character in here is just so enjoyable even June, despite how much I hate her being that social media girl, but they do it in a way that makes you wonder why is she like that and to want to know more about her. The mystery and the hunt are just starting and I can not wait to see what lies at the end of this tunnel. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

ARCHIE MEETS BATMAN '66 #1
Written By: Jeff Parker & Michael Moreci
Pencils By: Dan Parnet
Inks By: J. Bone
Colors By: Kelly Fitzpatrick
Letters By: Jack Morelli
Main Cover By Micahel & Laura Allred
Variant Covers By: Various Artist
Price: $3.99

Archie Meets Batman '66 #1 is a nice start to what seems to be shaping up to be everything I want it to be. I grew up watching reruns of the Adam West and Burt Ward Batman, I had a crush on Yvonne Craig as Batgirl and it was a blast! All the fun and camp I remember as I laid on the floor playing with my toys while watching the show was in this book. I also grew up reading classic Archie comics and every bit of those classics is here as well. With the Penguin, Catwoman (Julie Newmar), The Riddler and The Joker it felt like a sequel to the 1966 Batman movie, with Poison Ivy and the Archie gang thrown in. The only down side is they don't meet until the end, which is a great cliffhanger moment but I wanted to see more crossing over. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

SOULFIRE VOLUME 7 #1
Written By: J.T. Krull
Pencils & Inks By: Chahine Ladjouze
Digital Inks By: Mark Roslan & Justice
Letters By: Zen
Cover By: Wes Hartman
Price: $3.99

If you have never read the previous six volumes of Soulfire that is ok, volume 7 #1 is a great jumping on point for you either way. I have heard people say that Aspen is a hard universe to get into, and at times I could agree, but this latest run for their 15th anniversary is very easily accessible no matter where you are in Aspen fan spectrum, newbie, dabbler, or hardcore fan and I have to give a big chunk of that credit to J.T. Krull and the rest of the crew. Krull has really ground this fantastical magical world of dragons and people with wings in a way that all of that is still vital but is just a part of the world and doesn't overwhelm you. I love the stuff going on with Grace wanting to stop hiding, and just be free to be herself, it isn't about the magic, it is about something universal that need at some point in your life to let people see who you really are that makes this story so good for me. The art here is every bit as magical and beautiful as dragons and a winged woman Ladjouze really does Michael Turner proud here. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

FENCE #7
Created By: C.S. Pacat & Johanna The Mad
Written By: C.S. Pacat
Art By: Johanna The Mad
Colors By: Joana Lafuente
Letters By: Jim Campbell
Cover By: HamletMachine
Price: $3.99

Fence is a book I look forward to every month, and I never thought I would. The way Pacat & Johanna the Mad pull you into every issue is just amazing. Even the most mundane of things like Seij's morning routine seems so engaging that you feel like you are right there at King's Row on the Fencing Team with them. The art plays a big part in this inclusion immersion feel with how Johanna The Mad draws the crowd as mere mindless faceless blurs allowing us to understand the zone of the fencers. But the highlight for me this issue was the relationship between Seiji and Nicholas, "INDIRECT VICTORY"! ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

Another PRODIGIOUS issue! This is the gathering of the troops issue, the Ranger sent out the call, they are making their plans and preparing for the final battle with the greatest evil they have ever faced.... Kyle Higgins! That is right Lord Drakkon who? Higgins proves again that he is the greatest evil as he has Drakkon kill again, and I LOVE IT! I never felt this excited about Power Rangers, and we are nearing the end, Higgins begins to connect dots, bring all the pieces together, like Terra Venture and Grace, Andros, Karone and Doggie, the Ranger Slayer, HyperForce, YES HYPERFORCE and more! I can not wait with just three issues of Shattered Grid left I am on the edge of my seat! ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

WWE #19
Main Story Written By: Dennis Hopeless
Main Story Art By: Serge Acuna
“Second Nature” Written By: Julian May
“Second Nature” Art By: Rodrigo Lorenzo
Colors By: Doug Garbark
Letters By: Jim Campbell
Cover By: Dan Mora
Variant Covers By: Adam Riches, Brent Schoonover w/ Nick Filardi, Andy Belanger
Price: $3.99

In this issue, Kevin Owens continued to pull Sami Zayn down the rabbit hole as the pair alienated themselves from the entire Smackdown Live roster. It was another beautifully illustrated and well crafted tale taking us behind the scenes of Sami’s crisis of conscience. Watching the events of this story line unfold on air, though, didn’t reveal any hesitation by Zayn at all, so this take was a bit of a stretch. However, I feel Hopeless gave us a strong enough explanation behind the hesitancy of Zayn presented in the issue. This issue picks up various story beats in the recent turn perfectly, even culminating in the eventual repercussions of their joint actions. The art and likenesses continue to be mostly stellar, save for the poorly handled tattoos of Randy Orton that just looked like brown smudges on his arms where he actually has full tattoo sleeves. The drama behind the scenes was a bit heavier handed than last issue, pulling me out of it a little, but overall another fantastic issue of this amazing series. The back-up story featuring the parallels of Ric Flair and his daughter Charlotte Flair was also very well done, but the art could have been a little stronger for that. Still, great storytelling and a nice addition to the issue. ~ Brant @BrantFowler

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON 12: THE RECKONING #2 (OF 4)
Story By: Joss Whedon & Christos Gage
Written By: Christos Gage
Pencils By: Georges Jeanty
Inks By: Karl Story
Colors By: Dan Jackson
Letters By: Richard Starkings & ComicCraft's Jimmy Betancourt
Cover By: Stephanie Hans
Price: $3.99

Now this is the Buffy I know! Last issue felt like Buffy but I said it lack the execution, this issue the execution is there as well, every moment in this book felt ripped right from the TV show. Buffy and the gang head to the future to find out about the Reckoning and form a battle plan but no one, not even the brains Giles and Willow have figured out that Harth knows their every move because he has all of Buffy's memories. But the best part for me was the rallying speech by Angel, this is where I really felt the story was right from the show. Buffy is known for these rallies, I could almost hear the score from the show and the actor's voice. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

BATMAN #51
Written By: Tom King
Art By: Lee Weeks
Colors By: Elizabeth Breitweiser
Letters By: Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Weeks & Breitweiser
Variant Cover By: Kaare Andrews
Price: $3.99

Bruce Wayne gets jury duty and the man on trial is Mr. Freeze. This provides a nice set up where readers see how Gotham’s courts deal with Batman’s cases. There’s a great scene where Jim Gordon is on the stand when evidence Batman provided is called into question. Plus while Bruce is sequestered for the trial, Dick Grayson fills in as Batman. This leads to another funny scene when Dick answers the Bat-signal and Gordon immediately knows it’s not Bruce under the cowl. However this issue’s best moment arrives with Mr. Freeze’s testimony. Freeze admits he only confessed because Batman beat him close to death. Freeze’s claim makes Bruce consider that he was wrong which leads to him being the only juror to vote not guilty. Also this is a subtle hint that Bruce may not be alright after last issue. It’s a clever way for Tom King to acknowledge last issue without making it the center of the story. Overall, Tom King continues to make Batman one of DC’s must-read titles. ~ Louis @SpiderMan1991

GREEN LANTERNS #51
Written By: Dan Jurgens
Art By: Mike Perkins
Colors By: HI-FI
Letters By: Dave Sharpe
Cover By: Mike Perkins and Wil Quintana
Variant Cover By: Chris Stevens
Price: $3.99

Green Lanterns #51 continues the Evil’s Might as we see the unthinkable happen to one of the Guardians of the Universe while the Corps try to stop Mogo from ripping it’s self apart.   To top it all off the home world of another Green Lantern is under attack and the whole race is in danger of extinction, not a good day for the Green Lantern Corps at all.   This issue sees the continuing build up to the Green Lanterns vs the Eon’s that is surely to come soon.  Dan Jurgens does a solid job as always and the art by Mike Perkins does a good job of telling the story.  I’m definitely in to see how this story plays out. ~ Justin @ExileState

Verdict: 3 Stars

INJUSTICE VS. MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #1 (Of 6)
Written By: Tim Seeley
Art By: Freddie Williams II
Colors By: Jeremy Colwell
Letters By: Wes Abbott
Cover By: Freddie Williams II & Jeremy Colwell
Variant Cover By: Tim Seeley & Chris Sotomayor
Price: $3.99

Injustice Vs. Masters of The Universe #1 feels like the spiritual sequel to both Injustice and Thundercats Vs. He-Man And The Masters of The Universe in all of the best ways. The action literally hits you from the beginning, but we also get some great character moments along side some nicely done social commentary. Tim Seeley and Freddie Williams II are the perfect match for this book, Seeley captures the fun camp of He-Man And The Mansters of The Universe and the loss innocence of the DC Universe from Injustice while Williams art gets gritty and brings home the stakes are higher here. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

Verdict: 4 ¼ Stars

JUSTICE LEAGUE #4
Written By: Scott Snyder
Art By: Jorge Jimenez
Colors By: Alejandro Sanchez
Letters By: Tom Napolitano
Cover By: Jimenez & Sanchez
Variant Cover By: Jim Lee, Sandra Hope, & Laura Martin
Price: $3.99

The Legion of Doom starts to get the upper hand. Grodd uses the Still Force to empower Sinestro’s control over the universe with the Invisible Spectrum. All of the things Scott Snyder set up in Dark Knights: Metal and No Justice are starting to pay off. However if someone only started this story with Justice League #1 will find this story rushed. Plus this story uses complex science fiction which may go over some readers’ heads. However Snyder also provides some backstory for Martian Manhunter’s time away from Earth, which should please some fans. Still these are the types of stories I expect from a Justice League title and if you feel the same way then you should give this series a shot. ~ Louis @SpiderMan1991

SHERLOCK HOLMES - THE VANISHING MAN #3
Written By: Leah Moore & John Reppion
Art By: Julius Ohta
Colors By: Ellie Wright
Letters By: Simon Bowland
Cover By: John Cassaday & José Villarrubia
Price: $3.99

Sherlock Holmes: The Vanishing Man could be a work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself. Everything you get from a Sherlock Holmes novel or short story is right here, but brought to life through Ohta's art and creative paneling. Watson, Lestrade, the Irregulars, the Opium Den, and most of all the engaging mystery that dares you to follow along are all here. This issue takes us a bit into Holmes' mind we see how he plays a game of chess with every case piecing together multiple clues from different cases seeing where they connect and doing so 5 moves ahead of everyone else. Moore and Reppion get you into the world or Holmes like few have been able to. The only downside is what is to be expected in a comic, that this is but a chapter of the larger story so you have to wait a month for that next chapter. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - TERRA INCOGNITA #1
Written By: Scott Tipton & David Tipton
Art By: Tony Shasteen
Colors By: JD Mettler
Letters By: Neil Uyetake
Cover By: Tony Shashteen
Variant Cover By: Various
Price: $3.99

I have been loving the Next Generation stuff IDW has been doing lately. This is what fans need, more Prime Timeline stuff. I rip into these books and I get aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-D again at maximum warp! This issue though might be my favorite to date. Sure Broken Mirror was fun, but a large part of it was about the action the intrigue, we get that here but we do not lose the explration, the science, the cast interaction, the jokes, the very DNA of Star Trek. This felt like an unaired episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation a lost script, whatever it is so genuine that I think CBS All-Access needs to hire the Tipton brothers for some scripting! Mirror Reg is just that perfect blend of the unknown psycho who Shasteen got all of Dwight Shultz little nuances down, that you almost felt it was him bringing Mirror Reg to life. I have to hand it to Shasteen here he really gave me all these little dead on moments where he captured the actors charm and personalities perfect.  ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

APHRODITE V #1
Written By: Bryan Hill
Art By: Jeff Spokes
Letters By: Troy Peteri
Cover By: Jeff Spokes
Variant Cover By: Natali Sanders
Price: 3.99

Aphrodite V #1 opens the reader to the city of Los Angeles after a recent terrorist attack that claimed a massive amount of life.  As a response to this Carver Industries has proposed to take over the police force, only to see that rejected by the mayor.  Leaving the mayor’s office Carver is attacked only to be saved by Aphrodite V. We get a bit of Aphrodite V’s origin and Carver is able to pull enough information from the attacking cybor to reveal a name, Basilisk.  Overall a good first entry in the world of Aphrodite V. Fans of Cyber Force and Aphrodite IX will feel right at home as this new series kicks off. ~ Justin @ExileState

THE MAGIC ORDER #2
Written By: Mark Millar
Art By: Olivier Coipel
Colors By: Dave Stewart
Letters By: Peter Doherty
Cover By: Olivier Coipel w/ Dave Stewart
Variant Cover By: Rafael Grampa
Price: $3.99

This was my most anticipated book for the week, and it did not disappoint. While I didn’t feel this issue was as strong as the first, likely because of the impression and impact the first one made, it was still quite an enjoyable read. This issue, we learned more about some of the individual characters and how they came to be who they are today. I felt the story struggled just a tad to find a cohesive voice in the early part of the issue, but it really picked up when the attacks began again. Millar continues to fill the world with complex characters that have been a little too comfortable with their way of life and it’s coming back to bite them. The villains are threatening yet a bit intoxicating, and the heroes are certainly flawed. Coipel’s mastery shines through in the subtlety of the mundane day-to-day actions of these characters that makes the extreme events seem plausible and threatening while catching you just slightly off guard. All in all, this issue ended leaving me wanting more even with a slightly rocky start. Solid second chapter. ~ Brant @BrantFowler

THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN MARVEL #1
Written By: Margaret Stohl
Art By: Carlos Pacheco, Marguerite Savage
Colors By: Marco Menyz
Letters By: Vc’s Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Julian Totino Tedesco
Price: $4.99

The Life of Captain Marvel #1 is an exploration of Carol’s family life, something that I don’t feel like has been tapped into enough in the comics, but has so much to say and this comic proves that. Carol is forced to come back home when her memories of her father’s abuse starts to affect her emotional state. Margaret Stohl takes a deep dive into Carol’s childhood, and how this affects her recent visit to her hometown. My favorite scene from this comic is seeing Carol and her brother visit her father’s grave. Her brother passes a bottle towards her, and when she tells him no (because of her past with alcohol) her brother goes ballistic leading him to a terrible car accident. Carol feels responsible, and quickly settles into her old dynamic with her family to help with her brother’s healing. I loved Stohl’s use of pacing for this new life transition for Carol, as Carlos Pacheco visually shows this through Carol’s hair growth. I was pleasantly surprised with the book, this is one of the best Carol books I’ve read in years! ~ Kat @ComicUno

THOR #3/#709
Written By: Jason Aaron
Art By: Mike Del Mundo
Color Assists By: Marco D’Alfonso
Lettering By: VC’s Joe Sabino
Cover By: Mike Del Mundo
Variant Covers By: James Harren, Dave Stewart and John Tyler Christopher
Price: 3.99

Thor #3 opens with an unexpected event in Hel, The wedding of Hela The Queen of Hel to Balder the Brave, son of Odin.  Of course this is a wedding born in Hel, so love is not the needed qualifier here but instead the need to unite the armies of Hel against the invading fire forces.  Also, Loki kills Thor in this issue, that should be pointed out too.  Jason Aaron continues the path to war with this awesome trip to Hel.  Mike Del Mundo’s art is beginning to grow on me for this series as we settle in for the long haul. Overall this a fun issue with some good dialogue between Thor and Loki, before the murder thing happens.  ~ Justin @ExileState

TONY STARK: IRON MAN #2
Written By: Dan Slott
Art By: Valerio Schiti
Colors By: Edgar Delgado
Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Cover By: Alexander Lozano
Variant Cover By: Mark Brooks
Price: $3.99

Dan Slott continues to surprise and impress in the early stages of his run on this latest incarnation of the Iron Man comic series. This issue brings back the classic focus of another company stealing Stark Tech to build weapons, springing Tony Stark to action to thwart the use of his tech for such nefarious means. This is a long-time element of Tony Stark’s story that some may see as repetitive, but I feel it’s an important aspect of his constant struggle that always places his company in volatile situations. This story is no different as he is not only dealing with this company, Baintronics stealing and abusing his tech, but also the security issues involving Ms. Cabe. Added to that is the issue of Robotic Equality as Jocosta fights for Robot Rights while at the same time wishing to blend in. We learn of some secret project called eScape that Jocasta’s apparent lover Machine Man isn’t all too happy about either, adding another layer to this already rich story. Not to mention Rhodey’s struggle inside the War Machine suit and the never ceasing nightmares. The art is just as impressive as the story, ranging from the subtle background detail, to the more in your face mecha work and expressive faces, body language and action throughout. My only concern is that there is so much going on and so many little threads that the story may either become overwhelming at some point, or subplots may be lost in the shuffle. Overall, a very enjoyable reading experience, though. ~ Brant @BrantFowler

RUNAWAYS #11
Written By: Rainbow Rowell
Art By: Kris Anka
Colors By: Mathew Wilson
Letters By: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Cover By: Kris Anka
Price: $3.99

Runaways #11 lends the spotlight to Victor and Gert as they both deal with their new circumstances of lost time. This issue of Runaways is simple, but very effective. It gives enough panel time to all of the Runaways, but really digs deeper into Gert and Victor’s characters. Gert realizes that her relationship with Chase has changed, and when she walks outside she sees that all the modern hipsters have stolen her look. Without Chase, without her fight the patriarchy appearance - where does this leave Gert? Gert decides to “rebel” by changing her hair color back to normal. I was shocked, and I couldn’t stop smiling. What a great move on Rowell and Anka’s part!
Victor has some heartbreaking scenes in this issue. Both Doom Bot and Chase want to change Victor’s appearance and Doom Bot tries to turn Victor into a weapon. He desperately wants to separate himself from this body, and cries in Molly’s arms. Anka aces the emotions in this scene!
This issue also brought the return of Klara! Rainbow truly shows how she’s grown as a character. When we first met Klara, she was homophobic and against Xavin and Karolina’s relationship. Now she’s found family with a gay couple who is ready to adopt her. It was nice catching up with the character, but I wish the Gert and Victor storyline was better connected to Klara’s story. Her arc felt like it would have fit better in another issue. Runaways #11 focuses on characters that deserved the spotlight, and as always Rowell and Anka deliver a strong character piece for us hardcore Runaways’ fans.

P.S. I loved the small friendship moments between Karolina and Nico in this issue! (You didn’t think I would go a whole Runaways review without mentioning my girl K.) ~ Kat @ComicUno

SPIDER-GWEN #34
Written By: Jason Latour
Art By: Robbi Rodriguez
Colors By: Rico Renzi, Lauren Affe
Letters By: Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Robbi Rodriguez
Price: $3.99

Damn, an end of an era! Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez have ended their run on Spider-Gwen, and I couldn't have asked for a better conclusion. From start to finish the series kept Gwen's relationship with her father at its heart, and delivered a truly unique narrative to the Spider mythos. Gwen has always tried to make her father proud, even if that brought them to disagreements. As Spider Woman she used the moral compass that her father instilled into her, which ironically led her to some dark places, but just like any good Spider hero Gwen uses that darkness to bring lightness to the rest of the world, even her Venom symbiote. Spider-Gwen #34 isn’t too flashy, just a conversation between George and Gwen. They look to the past to help navigate towards their future, knowing that no matter what they’ll always be there for each other. Spider-Gwen #34 is the perfect ending to one of today's most important comics! Thank you Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez for the fantastic ride, and for giving birth to one of today’s best heroes. ~ Kat @ComicUno

X-MEN RED #6
Written By: Tom Taylor
Art By: Carmen Carnero
Colors By: Rain Beredo
Letters By: VC's Cory Petit
Cover By: Travis Charest
Headshot Variant Cover By: Travis Charest & Tamara Bonvillain
Price: $3.99

Tom Taylor has done it again! Who else can go deep about hate twisting Nelson Mandela's quote, then add a dose of fun with the best new creation out of Marvel in years Gabby and then go deep with the cause for Gentle's performance problems? Only Tom Taylor! Every page turn is a delight, but damn Gabby just always steals the issue! I have to also tip my hat to Carnero and Beredo who perfectly follows the transitions of the moods and uses the art and colors to reflect them setting the mood for us on each page. But the best thing is Jean, man I have waited so long to have Jean back and now Taylor brings her to the next level and I love it. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate

THE MALL #1
Written By: Don Handfield, James Haick III
Art By: Rafael Loureiro
Colors By: Dijjo Lima
Letters By: DC Hopkins
Cover By: Rafael Loureiro
Price: $3.99

I believe this is the first offering from Scout Comics that I’ve had the pleasure of reading, but if they are all of this quality it certainly won’t be my last. This was a great introductory issue that set the tone of the series and did a decent job of introducing us to each of the main characters. While I did feel the Free Comic Book Day story, which chronologically takes place after this issue, did a better job of engaging the reader by thrusting you into the middle of the story with a nice slice of life and relatable tale, this issue answered questions for me, the reader, that the FCBD issue didn’t. Now we are given a clear picture as to how these three kids came to run stores in a mall in 1984 and exactly how they are each connected to the mob. The events of this story illustrated how each of these kids’ home lives aren’t the best, and how becoming connected was really a step up for them, even if it is a dangerous one that ultimately finds them in a great deal of trouble. The art style fits the tone and vibe of the story, and really captures the ‘80s backdrop, as does the writing. As a kid who grew up in the ‘80s, I felt transported back to my childhood with the appropriate references and general culture. The FCBD issue sold me on the series, and this issue strengthened my appreciation for the title and gave me missing pieces. I’ll definitely be returning for the next! ~ Brant @BrantFowler

There book has everything I love about Zenescope, it flips the known fairy tales we know of Wonderland on its head, and it does so with these great twist and characters that come to live. Callie's story here is a perfect example of this, to show her using her real life story to sell fictional stories and cover up her family history is just fantastic! I can not wait to see how the rest of the series plays out. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
