SDCC 2015: All-New All-Different Avengers

Avengers fans ASSEMBLE! Get ready for an All-New All-Different team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! On the panel are Executive Editor Tom Brevoort and Director of Content & Character Development Sana Amanat, Wil Moss as well as writers Josh Williamson, Marguerite Bennett, Mark Waid, and Nick Spencer all on hand to discuss the newest developments in the Avengers family of titles from Room 6BCF!

THE TOTALLY AWESOME HULK by Greg Pak and Frank Cho. It's an all-new Hulk for an all-new Marvel U.Sana Amanat thought it was a joke when they told her they were calling it THE TOTALLY AWESOME HULK.

DOCTOR STRANGE by Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo is up next, on sale Oct. 7. It'll be a slightly different take on the character. Jason Aaron is really digging into the character, much like the way he did with ThorYou're going to see how Strange actually sees the world--they'll have something called "Strange-Vision".

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 is next, by Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, the showrunners of Marvel's Agent Carter. This is Captain Marvel elevated. Her next adventure is being Earth's first line of defense. She has a crew under her that will slowly be revealed. Kris Anka has given her a slightly tweaked design. She's going back into military mode, but she's also a diplomat. She's leading a team and also has a desk job, which she doesn't know how to deal with.

MS. MARVEL #1, by G. Willow Wilson, Takeshi Miyazawa, and Adrian Alphona. She's on the Avengers now. She gets everything she wants, and this story is about what happens when people know who Ms. Marvel is. Lots of her relationships are really different.

AVENGERS #0 is on sale Oct. 14. It's the kickoff not just for the main Avengers book, but all of the Avengers books. It sets up a lot of mysteries and situations that will play out in all the books as the weeks and months go on. Al Ewing, Mark Waid, Gerry Dugan, and many more!

ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS by Mark Waid, Adam Kubert, and Mahmud Asrar. Waid calls it a career highlight. The most important thing to Waid is to get back the character stuff, as well as all the huge, bombastic stories. For instance Miles wants to be reverential to Thor, but at the same time she's been Thor less time than Miles has been Spidey.

They wanted to put together a book and a team that feels more like the Claremont/Byrne X-Men. There's a lot of focus on character interaction. Waid says that they don't have access to Stark's money anymore. They don't have unlimited resources, they have to succeed against bigger threats with less resources. Tom Brevoort says it's not like they're poor--they have resources, it's just they have far FEWER resources than in the past. It makes things a little less easy to be an Avenger, and gives them more to work against.

SAM WILSON, CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 by Nick Spencer and Daniel Acuna, out Oct. 14. Nick Spencer describes Sam as an everyman, a really likable guy. He's of a different generation than Steve, so he sees the country differently and his priorities are different. He'll stick his nose into some thorny things within the Marvel Universe. It's got a lot of levity and is really fun. It's tonally similar to Nick Spencer's work on ANT-MAN.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez is "the book to beat," according to Brevoort. Over the last 10 years, Iron Man has become the character most associated with Marvel. They're sparing no expense or effort to put Iron Man at the forefront of the Marvel Universe in a big way. It's a new suit, a new outlook, new villains, new supporting cast, and new world headquarters.

NEW AVENGERS #1 by Al Ewing and Gerardo Sandoval. In Hickman's run on Avengers, Sunspot bought A.I.M. This book is him rebranding it as Avengers Idea Mechanics. It has Hulkling, Songbird, Hawkeye, Wiccan, Squirrel Girl, Sunspot, and a few other characters.Imagine the perks!

UNCANNY AVENGERS #1 by Gerry Duggan and Ryan Stegman is "the same thing, only different," according to Brevoort. It's still the team that strives to work across the aisle, but it's a little different now--it's not just humans and mutants, but also Inhumans. It has the most surprising Avenger of all, Deadpool. Spider-Man, Human Torch, and a new character named Synapse joins the team. It will be a lynchpin book across the Marvel line as things heat up with both the mutants and Inhumans.

ASTONISHING ANT-MAN #1 reunites Nick Spencer and Ramon Rosanas, the team on the current ANT-MAN book. Some time has passed since the end of the first volume, and Scott and Cassie's relationship has changed. It has a Miami Vice vibe, with lots of '80s villains.

ALL-NEW HAWKEYE by Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez, continuing their run. It's very different than what Matt Fraction and David Aja have done. It's a touch darker. They jump forward and tell the story of where Clint will go--it's Old Man Barton. It's about the future of him and Kate, and what happens when they have a rift. It will have flash forwards as well as told in the present. You'll have to pick up the book this fall!

THE MIGHTY THOR brings Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman back together. We know now that Thor is Jane Foster. This is the volume where they can really get into Jane's head. Being Thor is making her cancer worse. In the midst of this, Asgard will experience a civil war. Malekith will still be aligning all the realms against Asgard, which will be a big threat in about a year to both Asgard and Earth.

ULTIMATES #1 by Al Ewing and Kenneth Rocafort. Set in the Marvel Universe, but it's a team that tackles the huge problems. Stars Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and America Chavez and Blue Marvel. One of the first challenges they go after is Galactus.

The Hood in Illuminati has realized he's a bad person, and is totally ok with it. He's going to go full on into it. Team also includes Titania, Mad Thinker, Wrecking Ball, Black Ant, and Enchantress, who just wants to go home and will do anything to get there. Art by Shawn Crystal, covers by Riley Rossmo.

A-FORCE #1 by G. Willow Wilson and Jorge Molina. It's A-Force in the Marvel Universe. It's everything you love from the Secret Wars A-FORCE story, but now in the Marvel Universe. Threads from the Secret Wars series will carry into the new book.

In October, Marvel will be doing 26 variants featuring classic Kirby monsters. There will be one monster for every letter of the alphabet.

The panel the turned it to the audience for some Q & A.

Q: Are we going to see generational differences, where Kamalha or Miles disagree on how to approach a problem with Sam?

A: Absolutely. Everyone has a slightly different agenda/priority.

Q: Will Deadpool be the Deadpool we all know and love in UNCANNY AVENGERS?

A: Gerry Dugan's been writing the character for a few years. He won't be writing the character any differently on the team than he would in his own book. He has a great amount of depth and is very multifaceted. Steve Rogers kind of sees Deadpool as a reclamation project. He could be a positive member of society if he just had the right breaks.

Q: Will the Vision be more grounded in the new AVENGERS?

A: There's a Vision-specific story in AVENGERS #0 that will give you a good idea of where they're going. Brevoort jokes he's the adult in AVENGERS, as emotionally he's older than Tony Stark.

Q: There seems to be a big push around characters who have movies coming out, but a fan says he's surprised to not see a Black Panther book.

A: Tom Brevoort says we haven't revealed everything post-Secret Wars, but will neither confirm nor deny if one of those things is a solo Black Panther book.

Q: Question about the relationship between Steve and Sam Wilson?

A: Nick Spencer: "It's complicated." They're in a very different place than when we last saw them. There's going to be a real divide between them. Nick is a huge Steve fan though, so when they were coming up with the divide he wanted it to be something where you can understand both Steve and Sam's perspectives, and take sides. He thinks Steve has a really compelling perspective.

Q: Deadpool died before Secret Wars, how did he come back? And will he and Spider-Man argue a lot on Uncanny Avengers?

A: Not only did Deadpool die, everyone else did in Secret Wars, so the question applies to everyone. Spidey and Deadpool have a complex relationship. Deadpool really likes Spider-Man and, Spider-Man really, really doesn't like Deadpool.

Q: What's the future of X-23 as Wolverine?

A: She's in ALL-NEW WOLVERINE and ALL-NEW X-MEN.

Q: From a writer's perspective, does the character ever get away from you?

A: Williamson: Titania wasn't originally one of the main characters of the book, but when he began writing she just took that role.
