Yesterday The Walking Dead invaded Comic-Con International: San Diego 2015 with stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, Sonequa Martin-Green, Michael Cudlitz, and Lennie James who were joined by executive producer and showrunner Scott M. Gimple, executive producer Gale Anne Hurd, executive producer Dave Alpert and special effects makeup supervisor and executive producer Greg Nicotero on the main Hall H to discuss the upcoming sixth season of the show. Executive producer Robert Kirkman was scheduled to appear also but was unable to make the panel due to a minor throat surgery that left him temporarily unable to speak.
The panel was moderatored by Chris Hardwick of The Talking Dead who opened the panel with a roar of approval from the audience.
"This is technically The Talking Dead panel if you think about it."
- Chris Hardwhick
Hardwick announced that season six will premiere on Sunday, October 11 at 9 pm with a 90-minute premiere, with "The Talking Dead" to follow at 10:30. AMC will also kick off a "Walking Dead" marathon at Sunday, July 26 at 2 pm so that fans who missed out on the previous season would have a chance to catch up. Hardwick then rolled the official trailer for season six which was met with thunderous applause from the audience.
"I heard a lot of gasps when someone pointed a gun at Daryl there. I'm nervous too! I know what you would all do if something were to happen to him!"
- Chris Hardwhick
Hardwick then introduced the cast members and crew one-by-one. Each of them wore a gray shirt with a picture of Kirkman on the front, to represent the missing executive producer. McBride took the stage with a plate full of cookies, referencing an ominous scene from the previous season.
"Kirkman is now here in T-shirt form."
- Chris Hardwhick
"'The Walking Dead' premiere is going to Madison Garden," Gimple announced. "All these people can be there! Go to www.amc.com/thewalkingdead to join us at the premiere in October."
"There's a little bit of flashback, there's definitely some playing with time, but definitely not as much as last time."
- Scott M. Gimple
"My wife doesn't miss the beard, but I think that was one of the most weird filming days of my life. I had to shower naked in front of the crew of my show… You could see like two inches of my buttcrack. And then I had to shave in the mirror… doing it on camera was unbearable. Yeah, I miss that beard and I'm going to grow that back as soon as possible. Steven Yeun told me I looked like I had a shrunken head."
- Andrew Lincoln
On Rick's beard
"The beard on the show is really a metric of where Rick is at," Gimple added. "I will say the beard will continue to inform. It's a barometer of where Rick is at."
- Scott M. Gimple
"I was completely lying about the flashback question earlier. I'm working on an episode that's entirely a flashback. This is the truth."
- Scott M. Gimple
"We'll find out what Morgan has been doing with himself this season. He's been trying to find Rick, and he kind of wishes he hadn't. Morgan and Rick have a particular kind of man love, and I think the fact that Morgan has gone to find Rick… Rick is the last person alive on the planet that knows Morgan… that's why he goes to find him. They meet in such an important moment at the end of the last season, and there will be fallout from that."
- Lennie James
On what he thought Morgan was doing since Season 1
"The show is always so serious, so whenever we have a chance to do something light, we mark the bloopers and screen the bloopers at the end as a relief."
- Greg Nicotero
Introducing the Gag Reel
At that point, the floor opened for questions, with the first fan asking if the cast was afraid more of afraid of the Omega Heard of the Wolves.
"I'm not afraid of anyone."
- Andrew Lincoln
"They should be afraid of us."
- Steven Yeun
"Bring it! I'm more concerned with the living than the dead."
- Michael Cudlitz
"I think we're all pretty excited to come back. It's crazy. I've been working on the show for most of my life. I love this show."
- Chandler Riggs
Alpert announced actor Ethan Embry had joined the show in an as-yet undisclosed role
"My mom is desperate for Rick and Michonne to get together. Michonne is a fellow warrior. He respects her so much. He trusts her with his life and with his children's lives. He can be checked by her."
- Andrew Lincoln
When asked about the relationship between the two characters
"For Michonne, he was the one who checked her in the very beginning. She was kind of bug wild. That whole moment where she knew she had to change was because of him."
- Danai Gurira
"Every year, we go for more and more rot. One day, we had 300 walkers."
- Greg Nicotero
After revealing shots of walkers from Season 6
"This really is our year to celebrate the fan.. our partners at Fox International will be premiering it within 125 countries within 24 hours of the premiere. All you fantastic fans out there will get to see it soon after."
- Gale Anne Hurd
The panel officially drew to a close as Hardwick rolled the trailer one more time.
