Big BOOM! in Little China!

Earlier this week, BOOM! Studios released a teaser image depicting a very familiar figure from a very familiar cult film of the 1980s. While no other information has been released at this time, it's pretty clear that BOOM! Studios will soon be doing a Big Trouble in Little China comic!
For those that aren't aware, Big Trouble in Little China, starring Kurt Russell, was this crazy and bizarre, action-packed, somewhat cheesy (but in a good way), fun sci-fi comical movie that came out in 1986. On IMDB it's classified as an Adventure/Action/Comedy.

The premise of the movie boiled down was simply a truck driver getting pulled into an ancient and mystical war in the middle of Chinatown. And we're talking immortal sorcerers, electrical super powers, exploding heads, ridiculous special effects... everything you could possibly imagine in an action comedy film from the '80s. It's one of those movies that just becomes a quick cult favorite like The Last Dragon, or The Princess Bride. It's classic '80s hilarity. And that makes it PERFECT for the comic book medium!

Now, this isn't the first time the thought or the execution of Big Trouble in Little China has crossed the comic book world. Back in 2009, Top Cow announced plans to do a series based on the property, but that never came to fruition. And a smaller company called Crank Left published a book called Jack Burton Adventures (the lead character of the film, played by Russell), but that was purely fan fiction and not licensed or sanctioned by the owners of the property.

So this will really be the first incarnation of Big Trouble in Little China, to my knowledge, that graces the four color world we love so much. And even cooler is that Eric Powell of The Goon fame is doing the art!

Personally, as a fan of the movie, I can't wait for this to come out. While we were given no clear date, I'm guessing maybe a June release as that seems to be where current news is pushing toward now.

If you have not seen this movie, you should do yourself a favor and hunt it down. Or suggest it for Media Madness on our YouTube channel! That is, if I don't beat you to it! And keep an eye on BOOM! Studios for more details on the series as they become available.

Check out the trailer for the film below.
