IDW Publishing Takes a Trip to the Darkside… Tales from the Darkside that is!

By: Nicole D’Andria

The Eisner-award winning team for Locke & Key, Joe Hill (NOS4A2, Wraith) and Gabriel Rodriguez (Onyx), reunite in the revival of the former TV horror anthology series Tales from the Darkside. This will be a four issue comic book set in contemporary times.

This version of Tales from the Darkside will take some inspiration from episodes of the television show but will also have a meta approach. Each issue will witness the unfolding of a cohesive universe.

Hill describes the comic book as “the show that could’ve been.” He goes on to say that “The original Tales from the Darkside was a fun, bleak little spin on the Twilight Zone style anthology. My idea is to give readers a little more. Every story is meant to stand alone, but gradually, you will come to see how they all connect, to tell a single larger story.”

The editor for the mini, Michael Benedetto, said “The universe that Joe is building here is wholly unique while still doing justice to the original show… And having Gabriel collaborating with him again is the best we could have possibly hoped for. These guys have a proven track record, and this series will only serve to build on their reputations as excellent storytellers and masters of horror and suspense.”

There was also a movie... which involved Stephen King and George Romero! Now there's a match made in Hell.
Rodriguez will not only be doing the interiors but also the cover artwork. Charles P. Wilson III (The Wraith) will be handling the variant covers.

Tales from the Darkside was a fascinating show. While it doesn't comes close to being as much of a masterpiece as The Twilight Zone, Tales from the Darkside was often more bizarre. The concepts in the show never seemed afraid to be a bit silly and were usually pretty imaginative, memorable and sometimes eerie. One episode that has never left my mind is “Love Hungry.” It's about a woman who tries to lose weight through a company called “Your Weight is Over” which leads to some… disturbing results.

The first issue of Tales from the Darkside will be released in June. So your weight will be over soon!
