The TMNT
made their return to comics with an ongoing series started by IDW Publishing
back in 2011. The series is still going strong and is currently on issue 58.
Because of the high demand for the series, a second ongoing series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe, is
in the works.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe differs from the
original ongoing title by spotlighting characters/storylines that are important
to the IDW TMNT universe. The series will also feature numerous fan-favorite
creators and emerging talents. Cover art will be regularly provided by Freddie
E. Williams II (Batman/TMNT) and variants will be
done by guest artists.
The
creative team for the first arc of the spin-off series is writer Paul Allor (Tet,
G.I. Joe) and artist Damian Couceiro (Sons of Anarchy). Their
story will focus on the TMNT’s foe, the U.S. government. There will also be a
back-up story written by TMNT co-creator
Kevin Eastman (Heavy Metal Magazine) and
drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz (Moon Knight,
The Question).
I’m happy
to see a new series of TMNT since I
unfortunately fell behind on the ongoing TMNT
series (and by “fell behind”, I mean I read the first issue and loved it, then foolishly never picked up another issue). This seems like a great jumping on point for new readers, an
especially clever move considering the second Turtles movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, will be coming to
theaters on June 3rd, 3016. Hopefully my thoughts on that film will be better than they were for the first film.
The first
issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Universe will be released in comic stores this August. Its release will
mark the first time two ongoing series of the TMNT will run at the same time
since IDW got the rights to the Turtles.
