Legendary Pictures kicked off its Comic-Con International: San Diego Hall H panel with a giant bang today, confirming that they will be making a sequel to Godzilla.
The panel opened with Director Gareth Edwards, who is currently working on Star Wars: Episode VII, greeting fans with a video message, thanking them for the “okay” box office returns of the first movie and their support over the past two years.
Edwards continued by joking that he was supervising the reconstruction of the city after Godzilla's destruction. He continued by thanking the fans for their enthusiasm over the first and their anticipation for more.
“means we get to make another one. First, we genuinely need a break from all the pressure of doing a major franchise and all the fanboy opinions that go along with that. I’m very much looking forward to directing that film”
- Gareth Edwards
But that’s not all, Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull introduced concept footage for the second movie, which teased three new well known classic Godzilla monsters that will appear in the sequel: Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah.
We see the monsters’ silhouettes, along with retro "found" government footage of some serious looking meetings, accompanied by a voice-over calling for emergency meetings and disaster control. At the end of the clip the closing title card read, “Conflict: Inevitable. Let them fight,” followed by a brief statement from Tull.
“Now we have more monsters to play with and we’re excited about it!”
- Thomas Tull, Legendary Pictures CEO
No release date has been confirmed for Godzilla 2 yet. Hopefully this time Gozilla will get more screen time and the Marines can take the back seat!
