ARCHIE #7
"Archie And Sabrina Part 3 of 5"
Written By: Nick Spencer & Mariko Tamaki
Art By: Jenn St-Onge
Colors By: Matt Herms
Letters By: Jack Morelli
Cover By: Veronica Fish
Variant Covers By: Francesco Francavilla, & Sandy Jarrell
Price: $3.99

Archie and Sabrina's meet-cute. I am really enjoying this relationship and seeing how they met is just endearing them to me even more. Nick Spencer and Mariko Tamaki make a great team, this read like a cool Rom-Com and made me wonder why these two have never been together before? The one thing I would have liked to have seen is more of Sabrina's life since we don't really know that much of it in this title. The art felt right in line with the cutsie vibes of the Rom-Com story and made it all flow all the smoother. Overall this is another win for Archie. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #8
"Hellmouth Prelude"
Created By: Joss Whedon
Written By: Jordie Bellaire
Art By: David Lopez
Colors By: Raul Angulo
Letters By: Ed Dukeshire
Cover By: Marc Aspinall
Variant Covers By: Daniele Di Nicuolo, Kevin Wada, Kaiti Infante, Kelly & Nicole Matthews, and Becca Carey
Price: $3.99

The Hellmouth crossover event is about to start. Bellaire does a great job keeping the essence of the original series intact while giving it a fresh modern spin. Halloween feels like a great setting for this event and the way she not only plays off of the High School cast but incorporates the adults in this with the Museum opening is just perfection. The one downside though was a minor thing, how Giles and Joyce each referred to their girlfriend and boyfriend respectfully as their "Partner". Really, we are that PC now? Angel's little cameo was so on point that I could hear David Boreanaz's voice. I have to admit I have bad feelings for Joyce's boyfriend though, he is either evil or going to die in the coming apocalypse. Speaking of, I loved the scene of Willow floating practicing magic, it has my mind going crazy with how she will factor into it all. The art by Lopez sets the tone perfectly just enough of the dark mystique mixed with the rights shades by Raul Angulo. Overall this prelude has me hyped for the event. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #1
"The Angel Of Archer's Peak Part One"
Written By: James Tynion IV
Art By: Werther Dell'Edera
Colors By: Miquel Muerto
Letters By: Andworld Design
Cover By: Werther Dell'Edera
Variant Covers By: Jae Lee & June Chung, Jenny Frison, Joseph Schmalke, and Jae Lee
Price: $3.99

After a sleepover game of Truth or Dare, kids have begun to show up dead. This story is so worth the hype and then some! WOW, Tynion sets up a gripping horror story that grabs you right from the beginning and takes you a wild ride. The vibe feels very Stranger Things just in the sense of the level of horror/suspense but doesn't feel derivative at all. Every character feels so true and original, that I want to learn more about them all, even the principal who encourages Jim to beat the crap out of his bully. The story is only enhanced by the mood that Dell'Edera and Muerto create with the art using just the right use of what is out there to the sight of horror itself. Overall I can not wait to see what is to come next! ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¾ Stars

TRIAGE #1
Written By: Phillip Sevy
Art By: Phillip Sevy
Letters By: Frank Cvetkovic
Cover By: Phillip Sevy
Variant Cover By: Hannah Templer
Price: $3.99

Universes converge. I wasn't sure what to expect with this book which starts with a birth and our main protagonist getting peed on by the expecting mother, but I was happily delighted to read what followed. The story gathers three of the same women from Universes 314, 875 and 62 who then get hunted by a Terminator-like being. The only thing I would have liked is a bit of a glimpse into the one that looked like she was from some post-apocalyptic universe, but I am sure we will learn more of her and everything else in future issues. Sevy does an amazing job as the writer and artist on the book, a lot of the time when they are one and the same you can see one is a bit weaker, but Sevy exceeds in both. Overall this is an interesting book with a nice slice of life meets sci-fi vibe to it and worth checking out. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¼ Stars

DOOMSDAY CLOCK #11 OF 12
"A Life Long Mistake"
Written By: Geoff Johns
Art By: Gary Frank
Colors By: Brad Anderson
Letters By: Rob Leigh
Back Matter Design By: Amie Brockway-Metcalf
Cover By: Gary Frank & Brad Anderson
Variant Cover By: Gary Frank & Brad Anderson
Price: $4.99

The players are all on the board as Ozymandias' plan is revealed. This is a long time coming, and that is the only downside of this otherwise flawless issue. Johns reminds me why I love his writing in this issue as everything starts to connect and we see the ties into other things like Rebirth. What Johns exceeds at is making a very huge sci-fi epic feel very grounded and character-driven. While this is the penultimate issue Johns continues building the mystery and suspense with Saturn Girl, Marionette, Mime, Johnny Thunder etc. The art by Gary Frank makes the delays and the wait all worth it, each panel of every page is some of the finest art in the industry period. Frank brings so much of Johns script to life through the characters emoting allowing us to become more emersed in it and making this more than the average comic. Overall, bi-monthly scheduling and delays on top of that could turn people off from this, but if you stick with it every page is worth it. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¾ Stars

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES MILLENNIUM #1
Part 1 of 2
Written By: Brian Michael Bendis
Pencils By: Jim Lee, Dustin Nguyen, Andrea Sorrentino, And Andre Lima Araujo
Inks By: Scott Williams, Dustin Nguyen, Andrea Sorrentino And Andre Lima Araujo
Colors By: Alex Sinclair, John Kalisz, Dave Stewart, And Jordie Bellaire
Letters By: Dave Sharpe
Cover By: Ryan Sook
Variant Cover By: Bryan Hitch And Alex Sinclair
Price: $4.99

Rose Thorn is still alive in every future DC Future and seeking help. This was an interesting way to go with this story by using someone like Rose Thorn as the main character and I loved the comparison between her and Harley. The DC futures are very different from Batman Beyond to Kamandi to Legion and by giving us that unreliable narrator like Rose Bendis allows them all to flow nicely together.  Bendis packs this issue with so many little nuggets that I read it three times and each time I found new ones. The art was great with a different art team taking on each future it really allowed each time period to feel unique unto itself and more tangible. Overall this was a fun read and I am looking forward to the second issue. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¼ Stars

MARVEL ACTION SPIDER-MAN #8
Written By: Delilah S. Dawson
Art By: Fico Ossio
Colors By: Ronda Pattison
Letters By: Shawn Lee
Cover By: Fico Ossio & Ronda Pattison
Variant Cover By: Nicoletta Baldari
Price: $3.99

The Spiders are having very bad luck. This series is just pure fun! I don't think I had this much pure fun with a Spider-Man title since I was a kid, and this series brings me back to that time. Dawson does a great job balancing all three voices showing us how each of the Spiders is reacting to their run of bad luck. The way Peter and Miles take what happens as them failing and Gwen takes it as her not failing is a great way to show their personalities. I love that I continue to love all three of them equally because they all seem so real and relatable to me. Ossio does a great job bringing that fun feeling to life on the page with the art, making each page feel like it is right out of a Saturday Morning Cartoon and Pattison's color just pop off the page! Overall if you are a Spider-Man (either of them) or Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider then this is a must-read! ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

STAR TREK DISCOVERY: AFTERMATH #1
Written By: Kirsten Beyer And Mike Johnson
Art By: Tony Shasteen
Colors By: J.D. Mettler
Letters By: Neil Uyetake
Cover By: Angel Hernandez and J.D. Mettler
Variant Cover By: George Caltsoudas
Price: $3.99

The Discovery is gone and Pike needs Spock to help with talking with the Klingons. Beyer and Johnson do a great job filling in the time between the disappearance of the Discovery and the return of Spock to active duty here. They also bridge that gap between the Trek we knew in the Original Series (TOS) and what we got in Discovery. The way they use the events of Discovery to plant seeds of things we know in Star Trek was nicely handled. But the overall story is well done in itself as well following Pike and the Enterprise in this mission to try to broker peace with the Klingons after their recent team-up has me looking forward to the next issue and a possible Pike series from CBS All Access. Shasteen does a phenomenal job of bringing the likeness of the actors onto the page and uniting everything Klingon visually by showing all three versions of them in this one issue. Overall I have to hand it to the team, this is a nice holdover for the show and a great read. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

SPAWN #300

Letters By: Tom Orzechowski
Cover By: Todd McFarlane
Variant Covers By: Various Artists
Price: $7.99

Spawn celebrates its 300th issue by setting up the next 300 with a new direction and new allies. Spawn has always been an on and off thing for me, sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't but I am happy to say this is a time I enjoyed it a lot and I think it has to do with them taking it in a new direction. Each chapter sets up a new character that we will see in the title including She-Spawn and I really want to see more of the motorcycle jacket-wearing Spawn. The team of artists really are united through McFarlane's inks which give it a consistent feel overall and allows for a nice transition from one chapter to the other. Overall while I am excited about what is to come, I thought this issue does lack a new-reader feel to it, you do need to know what has been going on to fully enjoy the issue. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 Stars

AGENTS OF ATLAS #2
"The Portal City Of Pan Part 2"
Written By: Greg Pak
Art By: Nico Leon & Pop Mhan
Colors By: Federico Blee
Letters By: VC's Joe Sabino
Cover By: Junggeun Yoon
Variant Cover By: Sabine Rich
Price: $3.99

Is there more to Pan than there seems to be? I am LOVING Agents of Atlas, it is my favorite Marvel series right now, and Pak is killing it. I have never enjoyed these characters this much before, Silk was always a throwaway, a nuisance really, but in this title by Pak, I adore her, I want more. The newer characters too, I want more of them all. This is a large cast and Pak manages not to lose them in the plot, nor does he lose the plot in them. I also have to admit I loved that he pointed out the difference between Dragon and Wyverns. The art by Leon and Mhan is beautiful, it has a nice fun feel to it that really pops from Blee's colors. The character's expressions really help sell the issue. Overall this is a fantastic issue and deserves to be ongoing. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¾ Stars

CHAMPIONS #9
"While You Were Away"
Written By: Jim Zub
Art By: Steven Cummings
Colors By: Marcio Menyz
Letters By: VC's Clayton Cowles
Cover By: Kim Jacinto & Rain Beredo
Price: $3.99

Blackheart has control of Ironheart and begins to spread through the team dividing the original team from the new members. Zub has been doing a great job on this book, he really took it from a disappointment from the first volume to the highly anticipated book it is now for me. But even good writing can not fully overcome cancellations and forced endings of stories. Sadly this book and this issue do suffer from that. You can tell it from how quick Sam is turned back to their side this whole arc seems to be rushed, but it is still a hell of a rush and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The art is great, Blackheart is super creepy here, giving him just a touch of Death Note's Ryuk. Overall this is a great issue and should be cancelled. ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ½ Stars

HOUSE OF X #4
Written By: Jonathan Hickman
Art By: PePe Larraz
Colors By: Marte Garcia
Letters By: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Design By: Tom Muller
Cover Art By: Pepe Larraz and Marte Garcia

House of X #4 hits hard the whole issue and delivers where it counts. The mission is on the line and the mission cannot fail, no matter the cost. This issue of the House of X picks up with the X-Men on a mission to destroy the Mother Mold and prevent future devastation by eliminating it from existence. While fighting their way to release the Mother Mold from the control collars on the space station though we lose members of the team.  We see Kurt and Logan sacrifice themselves to make sure it was not all for nothing.  This is a mission that no one comes home from as we see Scott and Jean also taken out.  What this means going forward we do not know yet or if this will signal the reset of everything again.   Jonathan Hickman is weaving a masterful X-Men tale and adding truckloads worth of lore to be argued about for years to come.   The pairing in this series of Pepe Larraz and Marte Garcia captures the action and pacing as such a tale would need.  This series is completely reshaping the mutant landscape and I cannot wait to see what it continues to lead to. ~ Justin @ExileState
Verdict: 4 Stars

MYSTERE #1
"Part 1 Of 5 New Dawn"
Story By: Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco, Dave Franchini, & Ben Meares
Written By: Ben Meares
Art By: Sergio Arino
Colors By: Ceci De La Cruz
Letters By: Carlos M. Mangual
Cover By: Igor Victorino & Ivan Bunes
Variant Covers By: Martin Cocolo & Mohan Sivakami; Josh Burns; Harvey Tolibao & Ivan Nunes; And Leonardo Colapietro
Price: $3.99

Mary is in New Orleans and leaving Mystere behind her, but can she really run from who she is? Mary/Mystere is a relatively new character and I enjoyed her at Arcane Acres and now I am enjoying her on her own. Meares writes her in a way that brings the supernatural into a more down to earth way. I also love the slight touch of social consciousness in the issue dealing with the Homeless while not allowing it to overpower anything. Zenescope has some of the best artists in the industry and I am amazed no one has snagged them, Arino is no exception, he does an amazing job here with great attention to detail. Overall this is a nice jumping on point for Mystere and a nice read for all.  ~ Jay @ComicBookTheate
Verdict: 4 ¼ Stars

  1. Great post. Yeah sucks how obvious the early cancelation of champions has effected the book. Hope issue 10 at least is a double sized issue just to give zub enough time to end the arc and give a proper send off to the team.

Agents of Atlas, I cant say anymore. Something about silk and amadeus's interaction just seems so right. On a friend basis i mean(maybe sibling relation?). And man, that ending, I'm not a shipping guy? But man, hope that couple sticks
