Kat and Jay are both TV/Movie junkies, and wanted to team up on a feature every month to share their thoughts on upcoming movies. Check out Kat and Jay's thoughts on the key movies coming out in January. January is known as the dead zone of movies. It is when mostly mediocre movies are released.
January 3rd
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
Kat's Thoughts: This is going to be the fifth installment for the Paranormal Activity franchise and the first time that the film didn't come out during the Halloween season. It is weird to see this film come out in January. I feel that the movie will suffer because of this pushed released date. But saying that Paranormal Activity has always been about the money grab. It is a low budget movie that does relatively well in the box office so it won't suffer too badly. I have never seen a Paranormal Activity movie so I am probably going to skip this one.
Open Grave:
Kat's thoughts: Before writing this article, I didn't hear anything about this movie (I am saying this as a Joseph Morgan fan). I saw the trailer and it looks like a C-list zombie movie. It is about survivors of zombie apocalypse who have lost their memory. The only reason I would watch this movie is to see Joseph Morgan.(I am a Vampire Diaries/Originals fan and love Klaus) I want to see his range as an actor but, I would save this one for Netflix. I don't think this is going to be a movie worth seeing in theaters.

The Legend of Hercules:
Jay's Thoughts: I am a huge fan of Mythology and Greek Mythology is one of my favorites. The tales of Hercules have been told a lot of times over the years. His legends are extensive he is painted as a hero, a cad, but the thing that remains true through it all is that he is a warrior and I think that this movie is taking a shot at that aspect of Hercules, one that isn't seen as much. I think this will be a big hit for people who enjoyed 300 and Gladiator and they even laced in a romance subplot so guys can go see this with their girlfriends or wives and not have them tired of the action and fighting. I'm personally looking forward tot his movie the most in January.
Lone Survivor:
Jay's Thoughts: This movie is based on a true story, and stars Mark Wahlberg. Mark Wahlberg excels with movies based on true stories, like Invincible: THe Vince Papale Story. He really captures the characters in these types of movies and grounds them to where you believe he went through it all himself. With that said, I think the timing of this movie may be a little off for audiences I think a few months later would be better for ticket sales, but I think this will get critic attention.
Kat's Thoughts: This is probably my most anticipated movie of the month. I have been hearing people talking about this film for a couple of months now, but for the mainstream audience I think this will be an under the radar film. The film is about a man who falls in love with an IOS voiced by Scarlett Johansson. This will be a very unique movie, which will have to be carried by the performances of Scarlett Johansson and Joaquin Phoenix. I hope this gets some Oscar Buzz.
The Adventurer: The Curse of The Midas Box
Jay's Thoughts: This movie seems to be part adventure like Indiana Jones and part The Da Vinci Code but I don't think it has enough charm or intrigue as those movies did. There is little exposure of this movie, so little in fact that I haven't seen or heard anything about it until we researched the movies for this article. I think this is going to be overlooked by a lot of people.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
Kat's Thoughts: Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit is based on Tom Clancy's character Jack Ryan. This is not adapted by any Tom Clancy novel, but instead an original story. This will be a reboot to the franchise that started in 1990 with The Hunt For Red October. Tom Clancy unfortunately passed away this year. So, this film will be dedicated to him.
This seems like a fun spy film and if you like Tom Clancy's writing then I suggest you give this film a shot.
The Nut Job:
Kat's Thoughts: I have seen this trailer one too many time, and that's not because I am excited for this movie. I saw Frozen twice in theaters and this trailer played during the coming attractions. This looks like a generic kids movie. I didn't laugh at one joke and it seems like it's just a copy of every other kids movie in recent years. One character looks exactly like Ratatouille! I am going to skip this one.
Devil's Due:
Kat's Thoughts: What do I hate about January the most? The generic films! This looks like another generic film that we have been seeing since the Grudge. A man's wife gets possessed by the Devil. I have seen this type a film way too many times and I am tired of them. This is not what the horror franchise should be about.
Ride Along:
Jay's Thoughts: Kevin Hart plays a security guard at a school who spends most of his time playing games. Ice Cube plays the brother of the girl he is dating who is a cop and doesn't think he is worthy of her. So to prove that he can provide for and protect his sister he takes him out on a ride along. I was cracking up with this trailer. Kevin Hart had me laughing and reminds me of Chris Tucker in Rush Hour. Ice Cube plays a great straight man to Hart's funny man. This may not win any awards but will have you cracking up.
January 24th
I, Frankenstein:
Kat's Thoughts: This looks like one of the better films of January, but that is not really saying much. It is a modern telling of the classic Frankenstein story. But this still looks pretty generic and boring. I am going to probably skip this one, but if you are a big Frankenstein fan than you may want to see this in theaters.
January 31st
That Awkward Moment:
Kat's Thoughts: This movie looks okay. I really like the premise of the film where three best friends are in different stages of their romantic relationships. But this is suppose to be a comedy and I didn't laugh once while watching the trailer. That is not a good sign for the film.
Labor Day:
Jay's Thoughts: This seems like an unconventional love story. josh Brolin plays a man who escapes from prison after serving 18 years for murder. He enlists the help of a young boy who's mom (Kate Winslet) is completely destroyed from his father leaving her to the point where her hands shake and she is very timid. The two fall in love while hiding Brolin from the cops. This feels like a good date movie.
